Wear Red This Thursday

Over the last year, teachers from across the country have walked out on strike over better wages and benefits. That wave of union activism has now spread to one of the largest teachers locals in the country, the United Teachers of Los Angeles (UTLA). Even though the school district has nearly $2 billion in reserves, the district is asking for givebacks from the teachers. On Thursday, UTLA will be walking out on strike unless they get a contract before then. The Los Angeles School District has also taken the extraordinary step of hiring 400 scabs to replace the union teachers while they are out on strike. Our National union, the American Federation of Teachers (AFT), is asking locals from around the country to show their support for these striking teachers by wearing Red on Thursday.  I hope to see a sea of red on Thursday to support our Sisters and Brothers in Los Angeles.
