In collaboration with surrounding districts, Babylon Teachers’ Association instituted “Reading Across Our Community,” a program that delivered over 40,000 books through the AFT-First Book national partnership to Western Suffolk County in an effort to promote literacy, especially for disadvantaged children.
This would not have been possible without the help and support of the Babylon Family. On behalf of Babylon Teachers’ Association, we would like to thank all those who helped execute this wonderful initiative.
This project began with administrators, teachers, the support staff, members of the Board of Education, and parents who took time out of their day to fill out individual registration forms. Together, we brought over 1,700 books to our district alone. From the arrival to the distribution of books, the custodial staff provided invaluable assistance and support.
On Wednesday, December 16th, 2015, administration, teachers, and students collaborated both to sort and to prepare books for distribution to the students and families of the Babylon community.
Babylon PTA and the teachers and staff of Babylon will be promoting a program called “Parents as Reading Partners” (PARP). PARP is a program that asks parents to read with their children for at least fifteen minutes daily, stressing the fact that reading can be fun as well as informative. Learning to read is the single most important activity in a child’s education. Studies show that children who read at home are better prepared to succeed in formal education.
On behalf of Babylon Teachers’ Association, please accept this gift and use it to foster a love for literacy.
Kind regards,
Robert Richardelli
